Thanks William, you broached the tipping point. I'm officially sucked in.

Hark, what is that on the horizon!?

This is the statue that I built for the west side(I've decided that the Rainwave logo will be north!)

So who is the pixel artist? I know shinigamixbl is credited with Link. Has he done all of these (excepting RW logo, which was William and jff), or is someone else's hand at work here, too?

I did Mega Man and the goomba. I don't know who is responsible for the 1up mushroom.

I made the 1UP. The only problem is, I didn't account for the max-height for building, and so it's missing it's top two pixels! (which are 4 blocks since I doubled the pixels to make it epic)

I may undergo a project to replicate it 4 blocks down to fit the whole thing in, if I have time.

So, I had some time, so I fixed the 1UP to make it all fit. Afterwards, jfinalfunk helped me destroy the old one and add a glass bridge up to the top, so that you can use it as a lookout tower! Check it out:

Also, here's a view of the treehouse and the other pixel art:

And it appears that the link from Penny Arcade was more than enough to crush the poor server that was already at the tipping point of capacity.

I noted on one of the blogs that the website only has the capability of performing one user registration at a time, simultaneously... which is a bottleneck on a bad day, let alone a good day, let alone a 'link-from-Penny-Arcade' day.

William, is the Rainwave Minecraft server still up? Can we still 'tune in'? Can you send me the IP address, if so? (for the standalone client we need to connect via IP address)

(Let me preface this by saying: I know nothing about setting up a server.)

Would it be possible to set up a Minecraft Alpha server, as described at the bottom of the Minecraft homepage? This would mean that only people who have bought the game could play there, but it would be sweet to play Alpha with a bunch of you.

Let me know if it works for you. I tried the downloadable client, and it didn't work for me, but I didn't purchase the game.

I would also love to give this a try. I do have Alpha, so if you do find a server, or even find one of us able to host one, (I’d be willing to donate some cash or something for it, or I could see if I can’t scrounge up a monitor for that other computer I have sitting around without one...) let me know.

It would probably work if I had downloaded the 'Classic' client... Unfortunately I realized after posting my request that I only have the 'Alpha' downloadable client, so I can't test this just yet. (Although I will try once the site is back up and the Classic client downlad is available again.)

Does anyone know of another download source for the v0.30 Classic?

I'll be setting up business internet at my home in a few days -- I'd be willing to host a persistent Alpha server from it if we don't have a more active user hosting one by then.

EDIT: Actually, it's up now: Just enter cpetosky.dyndns.org in the alpha client. I'll be getting a static IP in a few days and will get a more persistent hostname, but this is good enough for now.

Note that I don't care if this becomes the "rainwave minecraft server" or not -- it'll be up regardless so I can play from anywhere. Feel free to use it or not. :)

Sweeeeeeeeeet. I hope you don't mind that I borrowed some coal and stone from your house, I'll replace them later ;)

I've found it to be slightly buggy (as expected since that's how it's advertised), but not enough to make it unenjoyable. I tried to chop down a tree, but the wood kept "popping" back once I had destroyed it, not giving me any wooden blocks. Also, the doors were acting a bit strange, closing after I opened them and not letting me out when they appeared open.

I like this world! I found and marked with torches some sweet cave systems, including one near the spawn point, one that makes a tunnel through a mountain, and one in which I think I heard some skeletons! I also laid a path of torches from the spawn point to the house, and left a present of some iron in one of the ovens.

I can't wait to play when others are around!

Yeah, we had the block issue when playing locally, but it fixed itself after a few minutes and hasn't cropped up since.

The door thing I've noticed too, it makes them fairly valueless. I haven't tried the metal doors yet; maybe hooking a switch up would fix the problem?

Other bugs in multiplayer alpha:
* Mobs don't die when attacked -- so I've disabled hostile mobs on that server for the time being
* Players don't take damage from anything, ever
* Sometimes your client will think a block is a different type than it is. When you start to hack on the block in question, it will then pop over to the correct type. (this only seems to happen after hours of playing, and solves itself by logging out and back in)

Heck, this thing IS addicting!
I played for 3 minutes the day before yesterday but couldn't understand how to do anything at all... yesterday I watched the tutorial, and spent the rest of the day on it! :xd:

Unfortunately I couldn't create my account, so I'm using one I got around... hope I can switch the username and keep my stuff.

Quick question: is there a way to display the name of the items in my inventory? I'm having a hard time finding out what materials I'm messing with. I'm trying to not use internet tips and find out things on my own, but I still don't know if that thing I find near rocks is granite or some kind of sand... or what are the black chunks that I sometimes get out of them (not coal).

If you're wondering, that stuff is gravel, and behaves more like sand than stone. The black chunks are flint, which has some uses, but I won't give them away ;)

FYI: Don't use minecart tracks on the server. They'll cause your client's CPU to start trashing and you (and likely anybody else in the same map segment?) will have to start restarting your client every 20 seconds or so.

You can craft them for your inventory if you want to "prepare", though it's semi-likely we'll have generated a new map by the time minecarts work in multiplayer, so that might be a waste of time.

Seriously, though... O_O

It takes a lot of work and planning to execute something like that... Heck, it took work and planning to make wormgas into a mathematically correct helix, and he used less than 200 blocks in total...

P.S. I've started to model his head/mouth after the worms of Arrakis :)

A lot of people make the really cool Minecraft builds with external editors with drag n' drop. Not that it makes it any less cool, but it's a different sort of difficult altogether.

I started a second server instance and I am working to dig it completely out so I can build something massive. It is long, boring work. My first thought was to set up a chess board over the entire world, where each square is 32x32 blocks. I'm not so sure about that now, but I'm going to keep digging and hope I come up with a good idea in the meantime.

:D

kidding. It would qualify as 'massive', and would probably be impressive upon completion, but not particularly full of subtle coolness...

Aside: We have a few people at work who assemble these massive scale models... it's a ridiculous amount of work, depending on the level of detail the client wants. For hillside work, we have a big machine that carves Styrofoam to match a previously generated digital terrain model (i.e. from AutoCAD), but all the trees and buildings are often hand-crafted and placed.

Upgraded to 64Mbps down/12Mbps up (actual, not rated) at home, it's helped server performance greatly.

Also, please use this NEW SERVER NAME to connect in to my alpha/SMP server:

I wrote my own custom server wrapper for SMP/Alpha multiplayer -- you can see it in action at octosphere.com

The proof-of-concept feature is listing the current players, as there's no way to do that in the stock server:

1) hit http://octosphere.com in a browser to see who's playing
2) /msg Octosphere list in IRC to see who's playing
3) Join the game and the server will announce to you who else is there

Other feature requests welcome! I'm currently working on some /stuck or /teleport commands that can be used within reason by non-op players.

yeah I've kinda fallen flat on Red Mage. I screwed it up and then lost my patience with the damned thing.

EDIT: oh looks like JFF finished, I'm guessing. And added a White Mage as well.
Now we just need a Thief somewhere and send it to Nuklear Power.

The Minecraft server address has changed. I updated the original post with the new address.

I thought I'd throw up some stereoscopic photos of Minecraft for everyone to enjoy. It's not exactly a 3D game, but if you cross your eyes and fuse the images, you can make out the depth in these pictures. Enjoy

Wow, that's awesome. You crazy eye doctors.

(jealous that I didn't think of it first)

Also a cool way to show some of the recent additions...

Oh, and thanks for the reminder that I haven't finished Kirby, yet...

Here's a few more. I think the second one is by far the best one in the series because the extra lines on the blocks really help with the depth. Also the closeness and farness of objects.

slick.

I finally finished Kirby, but I'm not particularly pleased. The pattern is fine, but Kirby uses a lot of derivatives of pink, and Minecraft's palette is a bit too limited to properly replicate this...

Aye, it can be hard to find sprites with few enough colours to create in Minecraft; I only made Ness a while ago because all my other ideas used too many shades.

Awesome, William... it's coming along :)

I'll have to plan a project for the 'southern forest' in the near future.

I have to say my favorite part is still the Fighter-doken. A cool detail not readily apparent: the "Boo" (ghost) is both the floor of the surface layer, and the roof of an underground chamber below... (and that's not the only thing hidden underground... tis 'minecraft', after all)

If there's anyone reading this that hasn't come by to take a look, I would encourage it. Just get a (free) account at minecraft.org, then find the first post of this thread for a link to join into William's server. This world is cool viewed through isocraft (above), but totally awesome viewed in the first-person. Feel free to contribute, if you're so inclined, or to just browse (and/or chat, if anyone else is on at the time).

It's a shame the Halloween update didn't improve SMP (and broke it worse in a lot of ways).

I'm delaying the data reset on octosphere until damage is working.

Has anyone been on the Minecraft server recently? I'm considering closing it down.

hmm. I can't say that I have been on it lately... However I have one outstanding project that I'd like to finish before we flush it.

I know it will simply go away once you shut it down, but that doesn't mean that this project doesn't deserve to be finished (art for the sake of art).

Hold off on pulling the plug just now. Ask again in a week or two.

Well, I've finished the 'beta' version of my ice castle/maze. I'll post some pictures later, when I'm at a more capable computer.

If you want to 'play' the maze, you'll find it in the... um... south-east (I think) corner of the map. Near the Raccoon Mario.

The rules are as follows:
1. The objective is to get from the Green Door to INSIDE the red pillars. Both objects are always visible, since the walls are made of glass.
2. Create a respawn point before entering the front door (do so by hitting 'enter'). There are traps that can't be escaped because:
3. Thou shalt not break any block in, on, or under the maze.
4. Thou shalt not create any block in, on, or under the maze. Breaking rules 3 or 4 would defeat the purpose, and would mean an annoying repair job for me. PLEASE don't break any walls. If you get lost or trapped, respawn to the beginning of the maze and try again (hit 'R').
5. If you do make it to the red pillars, congratulations! You win level 1. You will fall into a new area.
6. If you want to challenge level 2, try to get out of the cave system you fall into without creating or breaking any blocks. I'm not so concerned with making or breaking in the cave, since I didn't lovingly hand-craft it. I did make some modifications (If only to ensure there's a way out), but it's mostly randomly generated. If you escape back to the surface, CONGRATULATIONS! You win.

Bonus Level: Find your way into the crystal tower which you see high above the maze. This doesn't help you get to the red pillars, but it's fun, and comes with a good 360 view.

Hint: Don't avoid big drops just because you're worried about getting caught in a trap. There is at least one non-reversible big drop in the 'solution' to the maze. You're just going to have to take the chance and restart if you get stuck :) :P

Please let me know if you attempt the maze, and if you succeed! I'm curious to know how good it is :D

Yeah, there's this new mode called survival in Minecraft now. And unlike other games, they're still making regular changes to the game design. Even after release and even on mobile and console.

Also sorry for hijacking the thread after it was revived. But AlterEgotron needs players (Sinfest reference).
